Earth Day is April 22, and you know what that means: it’s time to show our love for the environment and focus on keeping it in the best condition possible. Although many films would be appropriate for this holiday (like John Cusack 2012 If you want a cautionary tale about what will happen if you don’t take care of the planet), there is one huge ’90s animated film that you absolutely must watch if you care about nature, fantasy romance, or Tim Curry as a sexy pollution demon. We’re talking about a cult classic: the ’92s FernGully: The Last Rainforest.
Even if you haven’t seen it FernGully, you may know the plot. When James Cameron Avatar was released in 2009, so many people compared this 3D hit with the 1992 animated film. Why? The plot is eerily similar. Both about a white man entering the habitat of a threatened society, FernGully is a lovely musical version of this story. To celebrate this environmental masterpiece, here are four things about it FernGully: The Last Forest that you won’t want to miss.
The main characters who were every Millennial’s animated favorites.
Whether you loved the laid-back surfer Zak or fell in love with the super cool hair and fun energy of the fairy Crysta, you probably had someone you thought was perfect. While none of them were as riveting as the foxish Robin Hood from Disney’s animated adaptation (Do I Tell Myself?), these two main characters and their love interests still captured the interest of many people at the time.
Robin Williams, who of course killed it as Batty Koda.
We all know how amazing Robin Williams was. Although most remember his most popular animated role from the 1990s as Genie in Disney’s Aladdin, Batty Koda is an underrated character we all need on Earth Day. Batty Koda, a former animal test subject, has the one-sided attitude you’d expect from a late comedian, and he completely steals the show.
Tim Curry’s Hexxus, including his great song “Toxic Love.”
Even though you had a crush on Crysta or Zak as a child, you may harbor those feelings for Hexxus now that you’re an adult. Tim Curry crushes it as the epitome of pollution, as he has often done in all his roles. He channels some smoldering Frank-N-Furter for Hexxus and has even inspired some TikTok fancams in recent years, which is no surprise.
A message that, unfortunately, despite the passage of 30 years, is still valid.
IN FernGullyZak works for a timber company that clears rainforests. When he magically shrinks to the size of a fairy, he quickly realizes what a terrible effect all this cutting has had on the planet. It’s a story from 1992 that sounds like it was written today. Hopefully, watching this will have the same transformative effect on you on Earth Day as it did on Zak at the end of the film.
